Meet Karey

Karey Swartwout is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate (Supervised by Patty Kenjura, LPCS) providing psychotherapy to individuals, families and couples in Texas. She works with clients managing the particular stressors that accompany professional achievement. These can include navigating high-stakes decisions, relationship strain, parenting while leading demanding careers, and transitions that test both identity and capacity.

Karey's clinical approach is direct, thoughtful, and grounded in evidence. She helps clients identify patterns that no longer serve them, develop more effective emotional regulation, and make clear-headed decisions when the stakes are high. Karey creates space for meaningful, lasting change.

Before entering clinical practice, Karey spent over two decades in business, communications, and hospitality leadership. That experience shapes how she works, with an understanding of what it means to carry significant responsibility, manage competing demands, and maintain composure when others depend on you. She brings the same rigor and discretion to her clinical work that her clients bring to theirs.

Karey holds a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations & Communications from Texas State University. She has extensive post-graduate training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). She is also a certified Parent Educator, Executive Business Coach, and a Mindfulness and Somatic-Based Practitioner.

FAQs

What can I expect in a therapy session?

  • Sessions are focused and collaborative. We work on patterns, coping strategies, and emotional regulation using evidence-based approaches tailored to your needs.

How is consultation different from therapy?

  • Therapy treats mental health concerns over time. Consultation is short-term, practical support around a specific challenge or decision.

Do you offer intensives?

  • Yes. Therapy intensives are available for individuals or couples seeking focused work over a shorter period of time.

Can I work with Karey if I don’t live in Texas?

  • Therapy is available to Texas residents only due to licensure requirements. Consultation and coaching are available to clients outside Texas.
