Couples Counseling & Therapy
Couples often begin therapy when the way they have been handling things is no longer working. Conflict may be escalating, and one or both partners may be questioning what needs to change. Sometimes pressures have accumulated through work, parenting, health concerns, aging, substance use, financial stress, or other changes in life.
Understanding the Pattern & Moving Forward
When a relationship is under stress, the same disagreements can repeat until it becomes difficult to see the big picture. Therapy provides an opportunity to slow things down and understand what is happening between you. During sessions, we begin to understand what each person can take responsibility for and what may need to change.
Depending on the couple, therapy may focus on reducing escalation, for example, or on navigating significant changes affecting the relationship. While understanding each other matters, so does putting that information into practice. We also work toward getting clear on values and priorities that can be carried into everyday life. Through this process, some couples know they want to remain together, and others are overwhelmed and less certain. Both are reasonable places to start.
